Yesterday, within the framework of the Brexit Channel meetings, the heads of the Secretariat of State for Trade, the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Trade in London, the Customs Department, and the Ministry of Agriculture informed the exporting associations and sectoral organizations about the current situation of global trade with the United Kingdom.
Spanish exports to the United Kingdom have recovered and are now similar to those before the pandemic and Brexit. However, the growth of exports is lower than that experienced in relation to other Community countries, according to the Economic and Commercial Advisor of Spain in London, Alvaro Nadal.
Regarding the various stages that the UK established for the control of imported goods following Brexit, multiple sources and institutions have stated that the British Government will announce a delay in the entry into force of the stages that were scheduled to begin in the coming months.
In fact, a new period of requirements is scheduled to enter into force in the fruit and vegetable sector on 1 July. One of the requirements is that all the goods must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate, an aspect that worries the sector grouped in FEPEX because it can pose a barrier to maintaining the normal flow of the fruit and vegetable trade.
The seventh meeting of the Brexit Channel, held yesterday online, was chaired by the Director-General of Trade Policy, Juan Francisco Martinez, and was attended by the Economic and Commercial Minister of Spain in the United Kingdom, the head of the Department of Customs and Excise, and the head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food.
