The rains in various parts of Karnataka, in concordance with a fuel hike, is now affecting tomato prices. Vegetable prices are shooting upwards, and Bengalureans and traders are on nervous. From a mere Rs 5 per kilo a week back, now the tomatoes are being sold for Rs 40 to Rs 45 per kilogram in the city.
Traders said that earlier there was a glut in the supply and it was sold for a throwaway price. However, now, the supply has been hit and the demand has risen. Thanks to a shortage in supply from the surrounding rural areas of Bengaluru, the prices of tomatoes are skyrocketing.
Incessant rains over a month in neighboring districts of Chikkaballapur, Kolar and Bengaluru Rural and high temperatures in the region have also affected the tomato supply. Farmers are unable to cultivate tomatoes as their lands are wet due to continuous rains and they say that the situation has affected 50 per cent of the production. There is a 40 per cent reduction in the arrival of tomatoes to the city. Traders say that they are not getting tomatoes from various parts of the country.
