Rick Mengers, ZON:

"Increased supply, empty shelves, good Easter demand coincide perfectly for Dutch asparagus"

"We had a great asparagus week," says Rick Mengers of the Dutch cooperative, ZON, about Easter sales. "It went from a fairly cold spell to pleasant weather, so asparagus supplies picked up nicely in the middle of last week. That worked out well, with good prices, at the end of the week."

"The supermarkets were particularly busy. Their shelves were quite empty, so they made good use of the asparagus. That resulted in prices of around €12, on average, with which, given the availability, we're very satisfied."

"Most of the AA white asparagus stayed in the Netherlands, while Belgium was very keen on the As," the asparagus buyer explains. "The lower graders were especially popular in Germany. Prices usually drop to about €5 after the holidays, but we've now had four days of production."

"I expect a slight price recovery in the coming days. They won't reach €12, but €6/7 is still possible. The weather should stay fairly warm, so we'll have plenty of asparagus at our disposal. Everyone's in production, but if demand remains good, the asparagus should sell well," Rick concludes.
