Inauguration of the Nova Siri Genetics Research and experimentation center

The Nova Siri Genetics Research and Experimentation Center for berries and strawberries was officially inaugurated on March 31st, 2022 in Policoro. The company was established in 2005 and, over the past few years, it has managed to stand out thanks to its dynamism and entrepreneurial vision.

Around 150 operators from the entire strawberry chain - including nursery gardeners, technicians, and sales managers - attended not only from many Italian regions but also from Spain, Poland, Mexico, and Australia. The inauguration included the research laboratory, the greenhouse covering 500 sq m, and the experimental fields covering 10 thousand sq m. A true hub for the company's research and experimentation activities.

Carmela Suriano, EMEA general director, explains that "despite the difficult situation caused by the pandemic first and then by the war in Eastern Europe, we need to look to the future with the hope that mediation and reason will prevail. This is an important day for us at Nova Siri Genetics. Today, we have opened the doors of our company to explain to all sector operators what we do every day."

"Nine NSG strawberry varieties already patented on a European level are available on the main Mediterranean markets. In addition, we have started the procedure to register another two cultivars that have resulted ideal for multiplication. Our mission is to contribute to the growth of the berry and strawberry sector and introduce NSG varieties to South America, Australia and South Africa too."

Nicola Tufaro, breeder at Nova Siri Generics, reported that "the greenhouse inaugurated today is equipped with high-tech systems and enables us to store and grow the original propagation material we use to produce the selections that will then be multiplied by nurseries and distributed to growers."

"We currently have around 3 thousand crossbreeds that are reduced after the elimination of those that do not comply with specific physiological characteristics. Already during the second year, we move on to the experimentation and assessment of 300 selections and identify the cultivars that stand out for their superior characteristics compared to existing selections. The process lasts years and requires a lot of attention and patience. The true satisfaction is seeing Italian, Spanish, Greek and North Agrical producers obtain excellent productive and commercial performances."

"We are moving forward also when it comes to berries. Our genetic improvement program has reached the parenting identification phase for raspberries and blackberries too. This is a long process as well, but it will lead to satisfactory results in the medium-long term. We are open to anyone wanting to talk to us and visit us at our center in Policoro."
