Tomatoes and other greenhouse commodities continue to see growing demand

Supplies of greenhouse tomatoes are strong currently.

Right now, there are tomatoes coming from various growing regions throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico. “We anticipate this strong supply to continue as we head into the overlap season of the winter and spring crops,” says Ray Wowryk, Director of Business Development for Leamington, ON-based Nature Fresh Farms. “We should see similar volume in comparison to the 2021 Ontario season. From April onward, there will be plenty of promotional opportunities throughout the spring and summer.”

Zanelle Hough, Sales Office Manager for Nature Fresh Farms adds that as it moves into spring, production will primarily come from its Canadian and U.S. operations with additional supplementary supply coming from its Mexican grower base. “Normal seasonal markets are anticipated throughout the spring and summer months without any adverse supply challenges on the horizon, making greenhouse products ideal for promotions throughout spring and summer months,” says Hough.

Local important for consumers
Meanwhile greenhouse commodities continue to see strong demand. “Local for all our customers is a priority, and greenhouse products such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers are popular items to promote on weekly print and digital ads,” says Wowryk, adding Nature Fresh continues to see growing demand in high flavor Snacking Tomato-On-The-Vine varieties. “We foresee having a continued positive effect on the overall growth in this category.”

Nature Fresh also has ideas that will enter the market in the near future for all three tomato, pepper and cucumber commodities. “With the upcoming CPMA trade show, we encourage all buyers to stop by and allow us to share our innovative offerings for the upcoming season,” says Hough. Nature Fresh can be found at the show, taking place in Montreal, Quebec April 5-7, at booth #315.

Meanwhile, labor continues to be a challenge for the industry. “Understanding this, our team continues to prioritize technology and innovation. In addition, increased input costs as well as increases we have been seeing in all forms of packaging,” says Wowryk.
