PomoDay in Sicily for a new round smooth tomato with excellent yields

With over 300 visitors, the day centered around smooth round tomatoes (SVTH5013 by Seminis, a brand of the Bayer Group) held at the "Living Proof" research station in Marina di Acate (AG), Sicily, was a great success. It was the first PomoDay for this variety, suitable for autumn-winter cycles in Sicily.

The variety raised a lot of interest thanks to its excellent grades, deep red color, and reduced sensitivity to ToBRFV. In fact, although plants can show symptoms, fruits manage to reach considerable grades and a uniform color up until the upper trusses, pleasing producers who will have good yields and little waste.

The Seminis Bayer PomoDay was also the occasion to appreciate Maraskino midi plums, a great product for Sicily. SV1201TC, a unique plum tomato for Sicilian winter cycles, also proved interesting. Both Maraskino and SV1201TC, showcased in Bayer's greenhouses, were grafted on Kratofort, the officially registered rootstock part of the O.P. list.

The Bayer Crop Science staff replied with a lot of professionalism and details to the many requests for information. Considering the great success, other events will probably follow.

Nematool, the digital system that helps producers

The "Living Proof" station is a state-of-the-art center where Seminis and De Ruiter varieties are managed with Bayer Crop Science integrated solutions. One of these is highly technological and envisages nematode monitoring with Nematool, a digital system developed together with leading research bodies that support producers to improve solarization and identify the best moment to carry out nematode treatments.

The innovative Bayer vision combines current defense solutions with digital tools such as Nematool and Seminis De Ruiter genetics to enable integrated and sustainable management of nematodes. Specifically, Nematool is a digital tool made up of a sensor with a graphic interface available online or via app and of an algorithm developed together with leading research bodies that supports growers to improve solarization and identify the best moment to carry out treatments. This integrated and sustainable strategy against nematodes is an alternative to fumigation practices.
