Miguel Gonzalez (MG Fruit) over Spanish vegetable season:

"COVID-19 infected staff currently shippers' biggest challenge"

The current greenhouse vegetable season in Almeria, Spain, is progressing well, according to Miguel Gonzalez of MG Fruit out of the Netherlands. "There are always ups and downs, but it's a good season price-wise. COVID-19 infections among staff are currently the biggest challenge for our Spanish shippers. That applies to the pickers, the packing stations, and transport. Many suppliers would like to load more. However, they're literally short-handed."

"Last year, there was a period when prices hit rock-bottom. They haven't been that absurdly low this year. Cucumbers are particularly well-priced. And the bell pepper market has also been generally good. Spain sends fewer tomatoes every year. For example, Intense tomato supplies are much lower. These are the densest tomatoes without losing juice or shape. Those yields lagged. Growers may also have planted less of them, considering the hospitality lockdowns."

"Dutch growers are lighting less. That could prolong the Spanish season, especially for tomatoes. We ended last year well, but this month has been truly fantastic in terms of sales. I think that applies to our colleagues as well. We're very satisfied. Of course, we're also pleased for our hospitality and food service customers because the restrictive measures are being lifted," Miguel concludes, delighted with January's sales.
