Thanks to Aldi’s collaboration with a Somerset farm, the UK will see the first winter strawberries produced. It is a collaboration between Bradon Soft Fruit Farm and Aldi that will enable UK consumers to enjoy ripe and juicy strawberries that are in season during the whole year.
The project, based at Bradon Farm in Taunton, used bespoke LED lights and renewable energy sources to mimic summer growing conditions from November to March. As well as this, the water is reused and recycled, and any plant waste is spread to agricultural land.
Year-round strawberry production also means job security for farm workers and reduced food miles and carbon footprint. UK berry supplier Angus Soft Fruits has also invested in the project-based at Bradon Farm in order to meet Britain’s demand for sustainable, premium berries available all year round.
