“I don’t know if my crop will be profitable in 2022”

Fertilizers, packaging, energy, and input costs keep increasing. In just a few months, the bill has tripled. Producers are increasingly worried about the rise of raw materials and the sector is warning that some farms may not recover.

Antoine Cheminant, a French producer in Carquefou (Loire-Atlantique) has seen his product costs explode (+15% for the seeds, +25% on stone wool). The price of fertilizers has also increased, not to mention the gas needed to maintain a temperature of 17°C in his greenhouses, whose price has tripled. “I don’t know if my crop will be profitable in 2022, it’s a total blur,” explains Antoine Cheminant on French radio France Info. His father has never seen such an increase for raw materials and according to him, large retailers should trim their margins. “There must be a revaluation of 20 to 30% to match the current increase in raw materials.”

Same thing for David Dubois, who also evokes the problem of packaging that has been shaking the sector for several months. “Paper bags do not meet the quality requirements. Radishes that are packed in paper are not visible and dry out, so this solution is not acceptable!”
