The EU accounted for 80% of the value of the Spanish fruit and vegetable exports

Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports to the EU-27 from January to August of this year amounted to €8,493 million, accounting for 80% of the total, according to the latest data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes. Exports to countries outside Europe totaled €285 million which accounted for 2.6% of the total.

In this period, Spain exported a total of 8.9 million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables, 83% or 7.4 million tons of which were shipped to the EU-27. Sales outside Europe amounted to 47,485 tons and accounted for 2.7% of the total.

Exports to EU countries from January to August grew by 3% in volume and 5.5% in value, while exports to non-European countries decreased by 15% in volume and 18% in value, reflecting, once again, the difficulty of consolidating markets outside the EU and Europe, where proximity and marketing conditions are similar, according to Fepex.

The United Kingdom, which already is a non-EU country, continues to be a priority destination for the Spanish sector. Between January and August 2021, Spain exported more than one million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables to the UK, i.e. 1% less than in the same period of 2020, for a value of €1,494 million (+ 11%).
