The European Commission announced that it will increase its aid to fruit and vegetable producers and wine growers impacted by the frost, floods, and heatwaves. This aid is provided in addition to the exceptional measures taken by the Commission in July 2020 in order to face the economic consequences of the lockdown measures due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Janusz Wojciechowski, European Commissioner for Agriculture, has indicated that these adverse weather hazards come on top of an already difficult year due to the coronavirus crisis. “These much-needed support measures will relieve European producers during this difficult period, in addition to the aid already provided in 2020 and extended in 2021.”
The EU will compensate the organizations of fruit and vegetable producers with at least 85% of last year’s production levels, even if the incomes for 2021 are lower.
