New community greenhouse and garden bringing fresh produce to Portland neighborhood

A local nonprofit whose mission is to combat inequity with leadership and entrepreneurial skills is bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to a neighborhood they say is underserved.

Project G.E.L. stands for growing entrepreneurial leaders and creating communities for teachers, students, and mentors to collaborate and learn from each other. The nonprofit has created a new community greenhouse and garden outside of the Schooler Prep Academy in the Portland neighborhood.

The founder of G.E.L., Malcolm Muhammad, says the community garden will do more than just feed people in need.

"We want to do two things with this. There is a homeless population here, and we want to have food set up for when they come by. Also, we want to use this for tech entrepreneurship. Once you have a garden or something like that, now you have a platform because there are a lot of different things you can do with a garden-like getting the food in stores or working with restaurants and stuff like that," Muhammad said.
