SA: Tunnel farming buys crops time

The Motheo Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College in Bloemfontein has embraced food security innovations. The institution unveiled its innovative greenhouse tunnel project on 13 August.

The latest agriculture methods are implemented, with the tunnels benefitting growers by extending the season in which they can grow crops. This is made possible by these crops being protected from extreme weather conditions such as intense heat, wind and excessive rain, as well as hailstones.

In these tunnels vegetable plants can be grown in soil or through hydroponic farming systems. Lame Morubane, spokesperson for the Motheo College, said the institution had piloted the project on a small-scale farm at Bloemfontein.

According to him the project was the result of collaboration between universities in the Netherlands and South Africa, with Stellenbosch University (SU) as catalyst.
