Antonio Ruiz, commercial director of Murgiverde:

"The transition from Dutch to Spanish vegetables will happen sooner than expected"

The province of Almeria is already beginning to give shape to the new 2021/2022 greenhouse vegetable season, which will soon replace the summer productions from Central European countries, particularly from the Netherlands. Almeria would start exporting its peppers and cucumbers earlier than expected.

Last year, the heat in Europe prolonged the Dutch campaign causing a tight transition to the Spanish campaign. This year, however, they expect the transition will happen sooner for some products, such as peppers and cucumbers, stated Antonio Ruiz, the commercial director of Murgiverde, a company from Almeria.

“Normally, the distribution has scheduled the dates of the change, and they respect them unless there are important quality or quantity issues. Many countries won't start leaving the market until week 41 or 42; others, however, will begin to withdraw earlier. However, everything suggests that the transition will take place earlier than usual because there have been problems with a shortage of Dutch peppers for the last two weeks and prices have been very high. There also seems to be a shortage of cucumbers,” Antonio stated.

“Almeria's production is on the rise and I think there will be a correct transition between the Dutch and Spanish campaigns. If it's well done, prices will be fair, right, and operational for all the parties involved,” the commercial director of this company that produces and markets around 200 million kilos of fruit and vegetables per season added.
