Dutch grower wants to get rid of 1000 kilos of organic tomatoes

Gert-Jan Dekker grows organic tomatoes in Andijk. The growing season was difficult due to the cold weather, but nature catches up. Now the weather is great for growing and that is causing some problems. The root pressure can cause cracks in the crowns.

That is an issue, because now the tomatoes cannot be sold as A-class. Gert-Jan called in the aid of Matthijs Post from Proevkantoor. He makes packages of fruit and vegetables from North Holland and has been buying Gert-Jan's products for years.

Soup or smoothie
"There are too many tomatoes to all fit into my parcels," explains Matthijs. "I have made them into soup and smoothie packages and I hope that companies and institutions will want to buy them for their employees or business contacts." The packages contain one and a half kilos of tomatoes, peppers, carrots and onions, as well as a recipe.

The catering industry or large-scale buyers can also buy the tomatoes per kilo. They are unsorted and therefore imperfect because of the cracks. "They really have to be removed from the plant, otherwise there is a chance that they will crack even more. After that, they can be kept in the cold store for a while. Within about three weeks the tomatoes should be sold."
