Erik de Jong, Jongfresh:

"Radish supply tighter from next week, finally a revival in marketing specialties"

The radish market was in a somewhat difficult situation over the last week and a half. "There was just a bit too much on the market", observes Erik de Jong from Jongfresh in Monster. "But the disappointing weather in August has slowed down growth considerably. The expectation is that we will all start harvesting a lot less from next week onwards, which will tighten up the radish market again."

At the beginning of the summer, Dutch radish growers benefited temporarily from the floods in the German Palatinate region. "Then we had two weeks of very good demand and prices. But while everyone thought we could benefit from this for a longer period of time, the situation soon came to an end. Apparently all the harvestable product was rained out, but the young stuff grew well through it all," the grower observes.

For the sales of the so-called specials, it was a difficult situation last year with all the Covid measures. "Things are now moving in the right direction. The catering industry is open again and the cruise ships are sailing again. But the market has had a serious dip for a year. That is why it is very welcome that there is now some more music in these sales," says Erik.

Last year, Jongfresh invested in a new greenhouse (1.5 hectares of the total 7 hectares) and a processing area (4,000 m). The greenhouse has been in full production for a while now, and as of next week, the new construction of the warehouse will also be completed. "We can't wait to move over to the machines, with all the logistical advantages that entails," concludes Erik.
