Salih and Batuhan Korkmaz, 2 brothers in Kayseri, Turkey are planning to produce 70 tons of strawberries per year by investing in hydroponic production and building a 3,000 square meter greenhouse instead of opening up a cafe in the city.
The brothers started strawberry production with soilless agriculture in the Esenyurt district. The brothers, who started production with 90,000 strawberry seedlings in a production area where 2 acres are greenhouse and 1 acre is an open field, aim to produce 70 tons of strawberry in their first year.
Salih Korkmaz: “We are a family that comes from agriculture. We wanted to do this all the time. Strawberry is an in-demand product and sold in all retailers. As a result of our research, we discovered that there are strawberry greenhouses in provinces such as Antalya and Aydin and we visited them. Then we wanted to do this in Kayseri and we started researching about it. We also talked to our foreign consultants abroad. They said that strawberries would be tastier and more aromatic in high-altitude places instead of cities with extremely high temperatures. We started to grow strawberries on the skirts of the Erciyes mountain to take advantage of the high altitude."
