"Greenhouse horticulture plays a key role in energy transition"

The energy transition brings a lot of challenges. "Greenhouse horticulture plays a key role in the acceleration of this process," the team with AgroEnergy says. How this is done is made clear in their new animated video.

Because weather-dependent electricity production using wind and solar has been increasing, more often than not, supply and demand don’t meet each other anymore, and the stability of the electricity system comes under pressure. For instance, during times with a lot of wind, the supply of wind energy is plentiful though this doesn’t mean that the demand for it is as well. The Greenhouse horticultural sector features a great amount of flexibility that could prove helpful in these cases. It even has the largest decentralized, flexible electrical power in the Netherlands.

By turning the CHP and/or lighting on or off, depending on demand, greenhouse horticulture can help restabilize the electrical system. Since the growers get compensated for this, they can use it to reduce their own energy costs while, at the same time, facilitate the energy transition.

The animated video shows the most important role greenhouse horticulture can play in accelerating the energy transition. It also shows the opportunities to reduce energy costs for growers.

Growers can help by singing up for emergency power, for which AgroEnergy has different options available.
