A price war in Belgian supermarkets is leading to giving away tomatoes and avocados for free in so-called combination sales. The Farmers Union already called for the abolition of such actions and the Flemish parliament also disapproves of the stunts. It sends of a signal that growers are cultivating a 'free' product. Which isn't really sustainable either.
Flemish minister of Agriculture and Economy Hilde Crevits was asked about the issue in Parliament yesterday. She then declared that she disapproved of the actions, but that she herself was not authorized to regulate this by law. However, at federal level, the responsible minister Pierre-Yves Dermagne asked questions at the Economic Inspection about the legal basis for these kinds of stunts.
If this proves that it is legal, then there is nothing left but a broad chain-based meeting, Crevits already hinted. "Deliberation is the only solution to hear each other's complaints." Crevits promised to take the initiative to set up such a meeting.
