Russia: Chuvashia needs more greenhouse specialists

As of today, about 150 professional growers are lacking and in the hot season, the number reaches half a thousand. The Russian Regional Ministry of Agriculture representatives have again raised the issue of absence of professionals in the agricultural enterprises.

Ms. Elena Prokhorova works as a supervisor of the cucumber department in the Novocheboksarsky greenhouse complex. The shift starts at 8 o’clock. The supervisor says she does not notice how the working day runs by. The growers have almost every minute of each day planned.

“I am happy with what I do. It is clean, everything is in order. The plants are growing and bringing you joy”, shares Ms. Elena Prokhorova. The supervisor tells that she considers the work creative and optimistic. The greenhouse management adds to that attractive working conditions and competitive salaries.

Currently, the greenhouse complex employs 500 associates and yet this is not enough. The complex requires at least 50 more employees. Despite all the measures taken to attract new employees, the greenhouse complex management failed to close the vacancies,. For that reason, the local Ministry of Agriculture decided to get involved in the problem.

Agricultural enterprises have always felt lack of professionals. According to the calculations by the Ministry of Agriculture, about 33 thousand people have left rural areas for Moscow and other big cities. Therefore, there is a plan to return people in the villages by creating comfortable living conditions and starting new investment projects.

“We don't think this will be sufficient to solve the staffing problem of agricultural and horticultural enterprises. We need to think broader and develop the industry as well as living conditions in villages. We raise the question of 150 growers lacking in the greenhouses, while at the same time we are lacking 700 teachers and 600 doctors. Without solving the latter issue, there cannot be comfortable living conditions. We have to tackle the problem as a complex”, noted the Minister of Agriculture of Chuvashia republic, Mr. Sergey Artamonov.

The republic have embraced the systematic approach and decided to start with children. Agricultural schools will open in Chuvashia, where children will acquire the knowledge and interest to the sector.
