According to the initial report of the 2020/21 berry campaign from the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Government of Andalusia, the strawberry acreage in the province of Huelva has been slightly reduced this campaign (-1.8%) compared to the previous year in order to make room for other berries.
The harvesting started in mid-December, although with very small and very insignificant volumes; around 100 kilograms per week in some companies. This figure has increased with the Christmas period, although the process won't be in full swing until March.
In general, the weather in recent weeks, characterized by cold and rain, has not negatively affected the initial development of the season.
According to the report, the Fortuna continues to stand out among the main varieties planted this season. This variety benefited from the cold of mid-November and early December, which allowed an optimal root development and resulted in "stronger plants." Other varieties mentioned by the Prices and Markets Observatory are the Savana, Rábida or Rociera.
As the document highlights, besides the most widely planted varieties, small varietal tests are being carried out this season on small surfaces. The aim is to find out how these new varieties perform and study their viability in future campaigns.
