Tanzanian PM calls for increasing horticulture production

Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Saturday directed the Ministry of Agriculture to work hard towards the improvement of horticulture production in the country.

"Improved horticulture production will help the country to enhance its economic growth," Majaliwa said when he addressed the Regional Horticultural Trade and Investment Forum in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

He directed the Ministry of Agriculture to create an authority that will specifically deal with horticulture production and to establish a research center for fruits, vegetables and spices.

The forum attracted over 400 participants and was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA).

On Friday, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Gerald Kusaya, said the forum was expected to help find new investment and trade opportunities in the horticultural sector.

Kusaya said export earnings of horticulture increased from 412 million U.S. dollars in 2015 to 779 million U.S. dollars in 2019.
