Price at origin of Spanish organic tomatoes 35% higher than the conventional

According to data from the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Government of Andalusia, the prices at origin of organic tomatoes produced in the 2019/2020 campaign have exceeded those of the tomatoes produced conventionally by 34.79%.

The Observatory says that tomatoes account for 37% of the volume of organic greenhouse crops in Andalusia and 45% of the value, based on the information provided by collaborating companies.

The biggest difference has been observed in vine tomatoes, as the price of organic vine tomatoes reached € 0.93 / kg; 45.3% above that of conventional tomatoes, which cost € 0.64 / kg.

For plum tomatoes, the average price paid to the producers during the campaign has been € 0.67 / kg; 34% more than the € 0.50 / kg paid for the conventional.

As for cherry tomatoes, with the round on the vine one the differential is 51.4% in favor of the organic, whose average price in the campaign was € 1.59 / kg, compared to the € 1.05 / kg paid for the conventional. For the loose plum, the average price of the organic was € 1.58 / kg; 42.3% higher than the € 1.11 / kg paid for the conventional. The lowest differential has been observed with loose round cherry tomatoes, with 9.3%, since the average price of the organic has reached € 1.17 / kg, compared to the € 1.07 / kg of the conventional.

The importance of the different commercial types of tomato varies when comparing organic production and non-organic farming. Cherry tomatoes and vine tomatoes have a greater weight in organic production. The cherry tomato represents 49% of the organic tomato, compared to 18% in non-organic cultivation, while the organic vine tomato reaches 33 and 16% respectively.

Cherry tomatoes and vine tomatoes have a larger share in the organic segment than in the conventional. Cherry tomatoes represent 49% of the organic tomato cultivation, while their share in conventional cultivation is only 18%. With vine tomatoes, the shares stand at 33% and 16%, respectively.
