Morocco exported a higher volume of tomatoes than Almeria for the first time

According to data from the Estacom statistical service processed by Hortoinfo, the province of Almeria exported 418.64 million kilos of tomatoes in the 2019/2020 campaign. This export volume is 11.3% lower than the volume shipped in the previous season and 25.2% lower than in the last five seasons. Meanwhile, Morocco exported 486.88 million kilos, surpassing Almeria's tomato exports for the first time ever.

The reduction in Almeria's tomato sales abroad was motivated by a decrease in production. Producers are leaning towards other crops as the tomato's profitability has decreased because of increases in production costs, price instability due to strong competition, and the effects of pests.

Export by provinces
Almeria continues to lead Spanish tomato exports, as it accounted for 58.2% of the 719.09 million kilos of tomato that Spain exported between September 1, 2019, and August 31, 2020.

Almeria companies have exported 418.64 million kilos, worth 521 million euro, and an average price of 1,245 €/kg.

It was followed by Murcia, which sold 79.75 million kilos abroad (11.09% of the Spanish total) for 77.36 million euro, at an average price of 0.97 €/kg.

The province of Granada ranked third with a volume of 74.81 million kilos (10.41% of the total) it exported for 145.51 million euro, at an average price of 1,945 €/kg.
