Luc van Wylick, Wymo Venlo:

"Steaming strawberry containers and trays to prevent re-contamination"

The end of steaming the strawberry containers is in sight. Strawberries will be planted soon. Everything must be spic and span prior to the new planting season. Working with clean materials is paramount.

Luc van Wylick of Wymo Venlo: "To prevent red root rot and re-contamination with Phytophthora, you have to implement preventive measures. As a strawberry grower, you should do everything you can to prevent production losses. And it can be done. Fortunately, increasingly more growers make use of that option.”

Germany

At the moment Wymo Venlo is steaming strawberry containers and trays around Munich. German strawberry growers know where to find Luc 780 km from home. With his mobile installation he sets off for southern Germany. Luc laughs: "Yes, that is quite unique. In strawberry cultivation you can also see what the rest of the world is doing. Knowledge and expertise are preferably obtained from the Netherlands. I think that our steaming method is more effective."

Luc is pleased with last year's investment. This spring and summer, the new boiler with three steering axles and the associated generator set was used for the first time. "We are now working even more effectively."

Raspberries
With the steaming of containers and trays, Luc is following the trend that more strawberries are being grown. And he sees that happening for other soft fruit as well. And especially for the raspberries. The used pots are expensive to purchase and with steaming the pots can be re-used, and the raspberry grower can save on costs.
