Didier Algoet grows green peppers:

"The turnover is the same as last year, but the production is slightly higher"

At bell pepper grower Algoet-Geutjens in Duffel (Belgium), the gutters were unable to handle the large volume of water following heavy rain showers. "A pity losing all that water, but luckily it didn't rain inside."

This summer, Flandria, the quality label under which the grower sells at the BelOrta auction, took a look in the greenhouse at grower Didier Algoet. The company was founded in 1994 and now grows green peppers on 2 hectares. Planting took place on December 1 and at the end of October / early November, when production ends, it will have yielded about 3.5 million peppers.

Didier also mentions in the above video about the use of a CHP. "In 1998, we were one of the first in Belgium with such a system."

Good quality despite heat
Last week, green pepper prices peaked. That was because of a lower supply. This week, production has picked up again, as Didier concludes. "The biggest peaks in production are now behind us."

The quality is now good, also from the new fruits from the latest crop during the heat. "I was a bit worried about the crop development, but the quality of the fruits is not too bad and is better than what I feared for a while due to the weather extremes."

Same as 2019
With just seven to eight weeks to go before Didier will clear out his greenhouse again for a new crop, he expects turnover to be comparable to last year. "In terms of turnover, this year is similar to that of last year, but with a slightly higher production. So we cannot complain, especially if you look at colleagues in other crops where things are more difficult this year."
