Turkish municipality uses waste management facility to grow tomatoes

The Kayseri municipality in Turkey has set up a waste management facility in 2013, and now the methane gas emitted from processed waste is used to generate 38 million kilowatts of electricity annually. The hot water which emerges during the electricity generation is used in the heating of the municipality’s greenhouse where 500 tons of tomatoes are grown through hydroponic production.

These tomatoes from the city’s greenhouse are sold to local wholesale halls and export customers. 50 people are employed in the tomato greenhouse year-round.
