Innovation is key for baby leaves

Maraldi Sementi is at the service of baby leaf producers with a range of green, blonde and red lettuces for different cultivation cycles. These new products are highly resistant to Bremia lactucae 16-36EU and summer varieties are tolerant to Fusarium.

Simone Belletti, sales manager for Maraldi Sementi: "Maraldi has always focused on meeting the demands of producers and of the fresh-cut industry by developing varieties that are resistant to pathogens and are versatile and uniform with great post-harvest performances."

From the Sele plain in Battipaglia (Salerno), sales technician Silvano de Martino talks about the competition for packaging companies and producers, meaning they have to pick varieties able to guarantee the best yields possible for all cycles and that are tolerant to pathogens and abiotic stress.

Blonde lettuce
MSX19935 is completely resistant to bremia (HR) Bl:16-36EU and combines high tolerance to fusarium races 1 and 4 (Fol:1, Fol:4). Fusarium race 4 tends to strike also at mild temperatures, but MSX19935 is suitable all year round in both northern and southern Italy. Plants are erect, with flexible wavy leaves.

MSX19935

LUNABIONDA has a medium cycle and is suitable for the summer period. This variety is tolerant to Fusarium and boasts good germination at high temperatures. The average blonde color and narrow wavy leaves make it versatile and reliable for the warmer months. (HR) Bl:16-25, 27-28, 30-32EU. (IR) Fol:1

MINERVA is a blonde lettuce with a medium-early cycle suitable for spring, fall and winter productions both in the north and in the south. Erect plants with narrow wavy leaves are easy to manage and with an excellent resistance to overripening. (HR) Bl:16-36EU.

AURORA is suitable for winter crops. Early cycle, voluminous leaves, dark blonde with a wavy structure, excellent yields. (HR) Bl:16-36EU

Green lettuce
LUNAVERDE is ideal for the summer and is very popular due to its excellent tolerance to fusarium, good germination and appealing bright green leaves. (HR) Bl: 16-25, 27-28, 30-32EU. (IR) Fol: 1

ATHENS is suitable for the spring and fall cycles in both northern and southern Italy. Exceptional thickness and shelf-life, erect plants and medium-early cycle with complete resistance to bremia lactucae (HR) Bl:16-36 and Nasonovia ribisnigri (Nr:o).

Lunaverde and Athens

FRECCIAVERDE is early and uniform for sowing between December and January in southern Italy. Complete resistance to bremia lactucae (HR) Bl:16-36. Erect plants perfect for staggered harvesting.

Red lettuce
OXANA has a medium cycle and is suitable for spring, summer and fall productions. Top-of-the-range when it comes to the deep color, as leaves are very dark even in the warmer periods. Leaves are wavy with a high consistency. (HR) Bl: 16-36EU

FRECCIAROSSA has an early cycle and is perfect for the colder periods. It is remarkable for its texture combined with the "triple red" color. Erect plant, wavy narrow leaves. Suitable for staggered harvesting and highly uniform. (HR) Bl: 16-36EU.
