What makes a fertilizer high-grade?

Quality is highly important to Prayon, a fertilizer producer. More fertilizers have been sold than in recent years, so it is important to keep stock and quality at a high level. The number of people in the world is also rising, so the demand for food rises.

With it rises the demand for fertigation, with which food can be produced efficiently. Farming ground is more and more used for high value crops, and high-grade fertilizers yield more kilograms of food. Dave Pinxteren with Prayon tells about high-grade fertilizers.

High-grade fertilizer
A fertilizer is high-grade if it is pure. For a soluble fertilizer, this means, among other things, that it dissolves fully, instead of one or two percent remaining undissolved. “There’s three things that contribute to the pureness of a fertilizer,” says Dave.

“The first is the starting material.” Starting with a more pure product, generates a more pure fertilizer. The production process is important as well, having the right knowhow and using the right technology results in purer fertilizers. The third thing is that the quality has to be checked very regularly. “You don’t know what you have if you don’t check the quality,” says Dave.

Benelux
In the Benelux it is important that there is not too much accumulation of natrium because uptake by the plants is very limited. Dave: “This simply means that there can’t be too much natrium in the fertilizer. Fertilizers of a lesser quality might lead to possible yield and (fruit) quality losses.
