Chinese liquor producer invests in sorghum greenhouse

Right now, it is the golden period of Maotai liquor production in China. The red sorghum is undergoing the brewing process of Maotai liquor to be perfect for the final products.

At the same time, in the mountains of Renhuai City, the seeds of red sorghum are taking root. The source of Maotai liquor lies in these young sorghum seedlings.

In 2020, Maotai Group invested 281 million RMB [40 million USD] to support the construction of a high-standard organic sorghum plantation demonstration base in Renhuai City, in order to build a high-standard "Maotai Liquor First Workshop", helping Renhuai City to overcome poverty and revitalize the countryside.

The project involves 11 villages in 3 towns totally, with a total area of nearly 3,000 hectares and a planting area of over 1,400 hectares. The estimated total investment is 610 million RMB [86 million USD].

In the past, the land in the village used to be "full with stones", which resulted in the fact that less than 60% of the area could be effectively cultivated in the village. After remediation, the land that had been abandoned for many years has been reused. The cultivated land area of the village has increased by more than 10 hectares.

Sorghum demo greenhouse
Yukong Village is located in Wuma Town. Here the soil is fertile, the rain is abundant, the Wuma River winds through, and the nursery greenhouse of the Organic Sorghum High Standard Cultivation Demonstration Base is here.

In a greenhouse covering an area of about 3,000 m2, the seedling beds are full of vitality and greenery. Sorghum seedlings are growing on floating trays, slowly absorbing nutrients in the water tank and soil. Several working farmers were busy moving the trays to the open space beside them. According to them, this is the process of "dehydrating and drying out" the seedlings in preparation for transplanting in a few days.

These sorghum seedlings were bred from the "red tassels" used for the brewing of Maotai liquor, and all the seeds were distributed by the Maotai Group to the farmers free of charge at a standard of 7,500 kg per hectare. After the seedlings are transplanted, a total of over 16 hectares of organic sorghum will be supplied to Yukong Village for planting. It is estimated that 6,000 kg of sorghum will be produced per hectare, reaching a total output value of 920,000 RMB [130,000 USD].

In 2020, 100% of the seedling transplanting will be implemented in the land remediation area, of which 60% of the transplanted area will be in these NFT greenhouses.
