Vivai Cafaro is a company located in Eboli (Salerno) specializing in the production and commercialization of baby leaves and aromatic herbs and exporting its products all over Europe thanks to the 110 hectares of traditional crops (40 hectares in greenhouses and 70 hectares of open fields). The company was founded by brothers Pompeo and Claudio Cafaro, who now manage it with their children.
90% of the production is destined to European markets, especially Germany, Great Britain, Belgium and Poland. Only 10% is destined to the domestic market. The products are distributed to the big retail chain and a few markets with a particular focus on the H&R sector.
Export sales manager Sandro Miglino reports that "we specialize in the cultivation and commercialization of baby leaves (rocket, baby spinach, red and green lettuce, red chard and oriental varieties) and aromatic herbs (sage, rosemary, smooth and curly parsley, basil) all year round. We also produce limited quantities of smooth and curly endive, radicchio, etc. The produce is packaged in a modern facility equipped with refrigerated units and a vacuum system to maintain the cold chain. Our objective is to provide consumers with the best of the best."
"Rocket is the feather in our cap and our clients appreciate the utmost care we take producing it. Due to the Coronavirus and the closing of the H&R sector, our turnover dropped by 50% with orders cancelled and lower prices."
"Purchases of baby leaves and aromatic herbs have decreased both in Italy and abroad, also because people look for products with a longer shelf-life. Prices are now stable, but remain lower than last year."
The company did not have to deal with the big logistic problems caused by Covid-19. "Actually, the companies we work with helped us meet our clients' demands."
Relations with clients have not changed much. "As we mainly work abroad, we have always used e-mails and phone/video-calls. The only thing that changed is the fact that we suspended the company visits we used to organize a couple of times a year."
Baby leaves and aromatic herbs are packed in plastic or recycled PET trays as well as in 30-50-100 gram bunches. "Loose produce is also available upon request. What is more, we try to meet the specific requests of a few clients."
Products are sold under the "Vivai Cafaro" or personalized brands.
"We perform checks along the entire process - fields, facility and transport. The raw material and finished products are constantly monitored by chemical and microbiological laboratories that provide immediate screenings and issue quick feedback. The food safety of our high-quality products depends on the management system, which in turn depends on people, company values and suitable operating procedures."
The company holds the GlobalGAP and QS certifications.
