More and more strawberries are growing in the southwest, protected in foil tunnels or greenhouses. All in all, last year the volumes harvested increased to some 27,000 tonnes with less area under cultivation, as the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday. About 7,700 tonnes of this came from the foil tunnel or greenhouse, which is more than 28 percent.
The proportion has increased steadily in recent years, with outdoor cultivation declining accordingly. The statisticians cite the fact that the strawberries grown under protection can be brought to market earlier in the year and the yields are significantly higher and more stable.
