“Turkey is among the top-5 countries in the world in terms of geothermal resources. Our country is ranked 4th in geothermal electricity generation and 1st in geothermal greenhouse heating", according to Turkey Geothermal Association Chairman Orhan Mertoglu.
"However, we still have a lot of unfulfilled potential. Currently, our geothermal potential is around 4,500 megawatts, whereas our current capacity is around 1,600 megawatts. We also have 60,000 megawatts of geothermal heating potential. It is a cheap energy source that provides heating at a 70% cheaper rate.
"The investment cost for geothermal facilities ranges from 2,000 USD to 40,000 USD per unit, which is slightly higher than wind energy investment costs; however, the efficiency of geothermal facilities is significantly higher.
"Turkey has 500 hectares of geothermal greenhouses. The city of Afyon is the top-ranked city in our country with 70 hectares of geothermal greenhouses.”
