Fokke Dullaart (Harvest House): "Also trials with yellow brown and orange-red variety"

Area of Dutch Monterosa tomatoes doubled again

The Dutch Monterosa tomatoes are available again at Harvest House. Last Friday, the first tomatoes were harvested at tomato nursery Van Kester-Weijs, which doubled the area of this ribbed tomato this year to 6,000 m2. This year, other colours will also be tested for the first time: yellow, brown and orange red.

"Last year was a good season for the Monterosas, which is why the acreage doubled," says Harvest House salesman Fokke Dullaart. "The advantage of this expansion is that we can also better control the size grading during cultivation. We are only getting better in cultivation and expect a great year."

Thanks to a collaboration with the Spanish GavĂ  Grup from Almeria, Harvest House can provide its customers with this exclusive tomato all year round. "We mainly focus on fixed lines with the retail and have a limited portion for day trading. For example, last year we had requests from wholesale customers from Italy, England and Lithuania ", says Fokke.

"In these times of the Corona crisis it is of course exciting to start with a niche product like the Monterosa, but fortunately we see that several retailers are starting immediately. It is an exclusive tomato, which also has a considerably lower yield than a standard beef tomato, but customers have something special at home with this premium tomato", says Fokke.

This tomato is well known in Spain, but for many Dutch people it is really a new tomato, not comparable to Coeur de Boeuf, for example", says Fokke. "The ribbed Monterosa tomato is characterised by a typical Mediterranean summer flavour and a striking pink colour. The unique colour and shape ensure a striking presentation on the plate and they perfectly match the trend of 'instagramable food' and the desire to eat healthier and more vegetable with more inspiration is desired."
