Slight drop in demand and prices reduced by half

What is the impact of the pandemic on strawberries?

Strawberry picking still persists in the Metapontino, despite the health emergency. "Our strength is our workforce. The workers, moved by a great sense of responsibility, continue their work in the fields, fully equipped with all the preventive measures. Everyone must feel safe." This was reported by Carmela Suriano, CEO of Compagnia delle Primizie.

"At the moment, no difficulties are being encountered in the harvesting and marketing of strawberries, but there is certainly an economic loss. The lack of request from many categories has reduced orders. Large-scale retail chains are also slightly reducing orders, precisely because the drop in purchases affected mainly perishable products, such as strawberries. The habit of going to the supermarket to buy fresh fruit is fading because it is necessary to limit travel as much as possible."

"We expected an extraordinary campaign, which started well in advance and was characterized by a quite mild temperature trend. Instead, we are already seeing sales prices halved by as much as 40-50%. With regard to us, the main markets are those of Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna, located, therefore, precisely in those regions that registered the most outbreaks."

"We are now in the middle of the campaign season. As we approach the warmer seasons, temperatures begin to rise, allowing the fruit to ripen quickly. This leads to an increased need to distribute and sell the strawberries. Never before has it been so important to support Made in Italy, and we also want to praise all the hauliers who, despite the hard times, continue to serve the various points of sale in the country."
