Perspectives for greenhouse business development in Russia

Aleksandr Rudakov, president of Eco-kultura, spoke as an industry expert to Russian TV show Business Day, about the profitable greenhouse business in Russia.

He said that while the greenhouse industry in Russia is showing impressive profitability figures, a few years ago profitability was even higher. Due to the increase of expenses on electric energy, logistics and packaging materials in 2019-2020 profitability decreased. Eco-kultura, however, is still constructing new greenhouses and aim to do it in the future; the company has a strategic plan of development and wish to stick to it.

However, the situation in the industry in general is not entirely rainbow-colored. According to the president of the agricultural holding, only big enterprises having access to high marginal markets can maintain profitability at the level of 45-55%. Competency of associates also influences the situation: while Eco-kultura can afford a highly-paid agronomist and other associates, smaller enterprises do not have such an opportunity, which cannot but influence a company’s result.

Rudakov also commented that according to company research, there are good perspectives for growth in the tomato produce sector. Over 50% of tomatoes sold are imported ones and local producers are aiming at replacing the foreign produce. He considers that four years of properly planned activities should suffice for that.

At the end of the show, the participants discussed the situation on fresh vegetables in distant regions of the country and suggested effective measures on resolving the situation.
