The growers in Mardin, a city located in southeastern Turkey, keep fighting through problems as the production costs such as chemicals and fertilizers keep increasing. In addition to the high production costs, the growers are also dealing with high bills coming from the regional electricity distribution company.
One of those growers, Isa Deger, had to sell his own greenhouse for scraps. The grower has spent nearly 100,000 USD for his 8,000 square meter greenhouse and now had to sell it for 8,000 USD.
Isa Deger: “I built my greenhouse in 2005 and employed 12 people in it. We kept growing various products throughout the year; however, after the privatization of the electricity distribution company, we were billed differently and the bills started to rise up significantly. I have spoken to the electricity company officials many times to correct the issue and to change our rate to the usual rate before but unfortunately, I was not able to achieve that and had to dismantle my greenhouse and sell it for scraps.”
