The technical team of the Adesva Agribusiness Technology Center, based in the Spanish municipality of Lepe, has carried out an experimental study with the goal of evaluating the effectiveness of the new ECOSOFT containers for strawberries, manufactured by Veripack Packaging.
This study, result of the agreement signed with the manufacturer on April 9, has evaluated the effectiveness of the ECOSOFT baskets with a comparison between these and the conventional baskets normally used for strawberries, with and without the bubble wrap bottom. In the three tests carried out in the months of April and May, evaluations were made of the natural rot, weight loss, firmness, dry bruising and moisture, collapsing and appearance of the strawberries.
The conclusions of the project point to this type of packaging leading to a better performance in collapsing, weight loss and appearance of the fruit after 7 days on the shelves.
Veripack
The company Veripack Embalajes, part of the Guillin Group and based in the town of Moguer, has been responsible for the development and patenting of this new line of containers featuring a protective and shock absorbing bottom: the Ecosoft range.
This development has resulted in the first r-PET and PP containers adapted for fragile fruits, such as strawberries, that don't need bubble wrap bottoms. Its design on the inside acts as a shock absorber, isolates the fruit from the juice it may release and allows better air circulation under the fruits.
ECOSOFT has been presented as a line of monomaterial and 100% recyclable eco-designed products for the packaging of berries which protect the fruit during transport, improve their shelf life and simplify recycling.
