Temperature slump in Spain leads to high prices

Current cucumber price: higher than ever before

Anyone in Germany who bought a cucumber last week, had to pay an unusually high price for it. The price for the green vegetable is higher than ever. At 1.35 euros, the average price for a cucumber reached a new record high, as the Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft in Bonn confirmed. Consumers last had to pay a similar amount at the end of 2016, when the cucumber briefly cost €1.32.

Expensive cucumbers: Prices should drop again soon
In Spain, where the cucumber is mainly grown at this time of year, heavy rainfall, storms and a drop in temperature have recently affected the harvest. "These are all things that the cucumber doesn't really like," explains Michael Koch from Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft. "It will then grow slower." But the high prices will probably not last long. Because as soon as the cucumbers can be harvested in the Netherlands and Belgium, the supply is likely to increase again - and then, the prices will drop.
