Greenhouse tomato box leads man to childhood memories

Randy Gulli was wandering through Orange Circle Antique in Old Towne Orange on New Year’s Eve when a box caught his eye.

It looked so familiar, a lot like the cardboard tomato crate he used as a kid for his toys.

“I just looked at the side, and it said ‘Ricky and Randy’s Toy Box’ in my handwriting,” Gulli said. Ricky is Gulli’s older brother, who recently died. “I didn’t even remember I had written it.”

But the scribbling was distinctly his, he said. “It was no doubt that it was my toy box.”

The yellow-and-green heavy cardboard box – labeled “Glass Grown Brand Greenhouse Tomatoes” – was in Gulli’s home in Brea even before he was born in 1959, he said. Gulli’s dad had brought the box home from his work.
