Heavy weather damages Turkish greenhouses

Heavy rain and floods have damaged a number of greenhouses in Erdemli district of Mersin, located in southern Turkey. The growers now work with the Agricultural Office to get an estimate of the damages.

Current reports indicate 50 to 70 % of products are damaged in 25 hectares of tomato greenhouses whereas an additional 30 % of damage is reported in lemon trees covering 15 hectares. Further damage is also reported in banana greenhouses.

The growers are pleading to the state institutions to offer a lending hand in recovering their losses. Most of the growers, whose greenhouses were damaged by the floods, claim that they cannot even pay their daily workers their wages. The growers also note that even their non-damaged produce will have a quality drop which will hurt the prices they will be able to receive.
