In November, the theft of 10,000 kilos of bell peppers with an estimated value at origin of about 70,000 Euro was reported in a greenhouse in the west of Almeria. This theft is a terrible blow to any producer, since bell peppers have very high production costs, especially because of the price of seeds.
The families that grow bell peppers, as is the case of the one that suffered this blow, have to resort to financing to face each new campaign. It is true that the product offers stability in terms of prices, but it always entails assuming a high risk that, in many cases, is covered by different types of insurance. But thefts are not included.
The theft of smaller volumes from greenhouses, as well as of agricultural equipment, happens relatively frequently; however, the theft of 10,000 kilos of bell peppers presumably entails the need of a professional marketing line and, almost certainly, the existence of previous contacts and collusion on the part of the recipients, as they would know about the goods being stolen.
All in all, it is worth stressing that the Spanish Guardia Civil has experience in dealing with such robberies, so there is hope that the case can be solved.
