2019-2020 Australian bush fires tracked via satellite

Bush fires are sweeping through Australia. This video shows the devastating effects of these fires in December 2019 / January 2020. About 270.000 hectares (2,700 km2) have been destroyed in the Kanagra-Boyd National Park and surrounding areas. This is the same size as Hong Kong or Luxemburg.

Photos from the ESA Sentinel 2 satellites were used to make the fires visible for the video. They also show the total area affected. These Sentinel 2 satellites take images of every part of the globe, every five days. If there is no cloud cover, these photos can be used for more than just monitoring fires. It can also be used to monitor farmers' crops
