Tomatoes and nuts on the rise in Bulgaria

The Bulgaria import of horticultural products amounted to € 3.26 billion in 2018. Of these, € 5,959 million of nuts were imported from the US, Greece, Ukraine, the Netherlands, China, Argentina and Turkey. Tomatoes are number 6 of the 10 largest growth markets.

The top 10 retailers:

Kaufland (share of 29%)
Lidl
Metro Cash & Carry
Billa
Fantastico
Maxima (T-Market)
Tobacco Market (Lafka)
CBA
Lower Retail
Avanti 777

Bulgaria (with 7 million inhabitants) has a growing, young and rich middle class that more and more prefers quality products, especially in the big cities. The demand for imported products, however, is influenced by the EU subsidies that Bulgaria receives to expand and further develop its own food production. The agricultural area covers 64,000 km2.

Trading with Bulgaria is attractive in itself. Bulgaria is easily accessible in terms of sales. The country has two ports in the Black Sea and an efficient sales network, including four international airports. Marketing and advertising expenses are low.
