Ecophyto: farmers are confused and ask for a review of the indicators

Elisabeth Borne, Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, Agnès Buzyn, Minister for Solidarity and Health, Frédérique Vidal, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and Didier Guillaume, Minister of Agriculture and Food, presented on January 8th, to the Strategic Orientation and Monitoring Committee (COS), the results of the evolution of the Ecophyto 2+ indicators.

According to the ministers, the consumption of phytosanitary products has increased despite the multiple bans by the public authorities. These claims create a sense of disbelief.

In a press release, AGPB, AGPM, CGB and FOP indicate that “the increase of biocontrol, of organic farming areas (+13%), the removal of the most concerning molecules are all very real evolutions. But they also lead to an increase in technical dead-ends which cause several productions to stop, production costs to increase, as well as more sanitary risks (datura, ambrosia…).”

“There is an urgent need to put more realism in the indicators capable of valuing the efforts made. This would really inform our fellow citizens instead of stigmatizing farmers once more. Let us revive the dialogue through local charters, and give science and health agencies a prominent place again in the decision-making.”
