Gebr. Brill Substrate GmbH & Co. KG celebrates its 100th anniversary

Family business focuses on sustainable and climate-neutral products in its anniversary year

The Gebr. Brill Substrate LLC & Co. KG from Georgsdorf is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2020. The family-owned company is entering this very special year with a fresh, future-oriented approach and some new concepts. At the IPM, Gebr. Brill will be presenting innovative, sustainable and climate-neutral products, both for growing media and commercial soil.

Growing media and sustainability
For many years, the most important raw material for the production of growing media has been peat. With its many positive product properties, it is not easy to replace in terms of cultivation technology and is available in large quantities, which is only partially the case with peat alternatives. For this reason, peat will continue to be of great importance as a raw material for growing media and commercial soil in the future.

The Brill Substrate Bros. will handle the natural resource that is peat responsibly. They have been working on a sustainable product strategy for many years and have repeatedly presented newly developed or improved peat-reduced and peat-free growing media at the IPM. Since 2016, Brill has combined its substrates, which are at least 30% peat-reduced, in the product line "Green-Life Substrates", whose market importance is continuously increasing.

Support for the changeover to peat-reduced substrates
Brill's participation in various projects on peat replacement in science and practice and intensive customer support in switching to peat-reduced or peat-free substrates is the right way for Brill to meet the increasing demand for peat-reduced substrates and at the same time to supply reliably functioning growing media.

"We and all our employees are grateful for what we have achieved over the last 100 years. Today, the increasing focus on a sustainable business orientation becomes important for the future. For us, this is not only an internal technical issue, but also a service issue when it comes to implementation in the market. We offer our customers active support," says Gerrit Brill, owner and managing director. The Brill substrate experts are able to recommend suitable peat-reduced recipes for all important standard peat substrates to their customers on request. These are adapted to the individual cultivation conditions and requirements in personal discussions.

New requirements regarding impact on climate
While the demand for peat substitutes has been the main driver of development up to now, the issue of the "climate impact" of products has also been gaining in importance for about a year now. As a reaction to the clearly noticeable increase in sustainability and especially climate awareness among growing customer groups, Brill will present three new climate-neutral TerraBRILL sales soils at the IPM.

New range of climate-neutral growing media
For the peat-reduced Green Life culture substrates and the Brill Bio substrates, the CO2 emissions were also determined by ClimatePartner. All these substrates are peat reduced by at least 30%. On request, Brill offers these 12 proven culture substrates also climate neutrally with immediate effect. This offers horticultural businesses an interesting possibility of differentiation. If you have further questions about the possible offer of climate-neutral plants, Brill is there to offer support.
