The cold temperatures recorded in the province of Almeria have given a boost to the production of Raf tomatoes by Grupo Agroponiente. Miguel Moreno, technical engineer specialized in tomatoes from the company's Technical Department, said that “we are at a time when earlier plantation cycles thrive, with improvements in terms of quality thanks to the cold, and soon the late ones will also arrive, providing quality throughout the cycle.” Moreno explains that the taste of Raf tomatoes depends mainly on three factors: genetics, that is, the variety of ribbed tomato; the cultivation area, namely the characteristics of the soil and water; and the grower's management, which allows the plant to accumulate considerable amounts of sugar.
Moreno recalled that “the focus of Agroponiente, as well as of our company specialized in tomatoes, Vegacañada, is in the product's taste and quality.”
The company has also announced that new crop lines will be introduced, such as chocolate-colored ribbed tomatoes. This kind of tomato is mainly chosen for its innovative and attractive appearance, but also for its taste and good yield.
