China: A brief history of the struggle of snack tomatoes on the plateau at an altitude of 3,000 meters

Can you plant snack tomatoes at an altitude of 3,000 meters? The answer can be found in the vegetable greenhouse in Batang County, Ganzi Prefecture, along National Highway 318 in China.

In April 2018, Batang County’s Gaoyuanxian Ecological Agriculture Development Co., Ltd. settled in Batang and started the construction. The Plateau Eco-Green Vegetable Demonstration Park is the first phase of the company's construction project, which is located in Songduo Village, Songduo Township, which is more than 3,000 meters above sea level. At present, 40 heating greenhouses (for winter) have been built, 10 solar greenhouses (for spring and autumn) have been built and 1 smart greenhouse.

According to Meng Fanqiang, manager of the Gaoyuanxian Ecological Agriculture Development Co., Ltd., the snack tomatoes were planted in August last year and entered into the market in December.

According to the growers, due to the abundant sunshine, the large temperature difference between day and night and the high-quality water and soil environment, the fruits and vegetables here are crisper and more refreshing with richer nutrition. The snack tomatoes are very popular in the local market. It is worth mentioning that the snack tomato as a characteristic agricultural product in Batang County is entering the high-end consumer market.

At present, more than 30 varieties of cucumbers, green peppers, tomatoes and eggplants planted in vegetable bases have been entering into the market. These vegetables grown on the plateau have enriched the local vegetable market, and the people gradually bid farewell to the days of “food purchase is difficult” and “food is expensive”.

A brief history of a snack tomato on the plateau at an altitude of 3,000 meters, let us see the actual efforts of Batang in the practice of rural revitalization, helping the villagers to get rid of poverty and running a well-off society, and let us see the agricultural technology progress and high-quality development of agriculture.
