Incotec presents sustainability strategy at SMT 2019

"Use of X-rays to upgrade seeds fits in 'Mission Zero'"

Seed improvement company Incotec has recently added a number of organic top-up products based on X-rays for tomatoes and peppers. It fits in the new theme of the company that will be presented at Seed meets Technology (September 24-26) in Zwaagdijk: Mission Zero.

Erik Jan Bartels, Managing Director: "The critical issues of global food security and sustainability affect us all. Mission Zero underlines the involvement in our role as a seed improver whereby we help our customers to achieve their goals".

Seed improvement and coating technologies are already contributing to a more sustainable agriculture and horticulture by making a reduction in the use of plant protection products possible by up to 90%. The strategic direction of Mission Zero includes new initiatives such as the development of alternatives for micro-plastics in coatings, the substantial expansion of the range of organic products, working on techniques for the successful application of biological organisms and scoping the possibilities for biodegradable coatings.

Examples from developments from Incotec, in addition to the use of X-rays are also biological pills for lettuce, chicory and celeriac, but also a wide assortment of priming products for spinach, squash, tomato, brassica, carrot, parsley, pepper and Solanum torvum (pea - eggplant).

Lectures and seminars
During Seed meets Technology, Incotec will organize the lecture 'Trend or Truth: ‘How the micro-plastics debate moves the seed industry'. Incotec R&D Manager Marta Dobrowolska and Product Marketer Brechje Veerman will address questions such as: Which market and consumer trends have led to the forthcoming legislation on micro-plastics for the seed industry and what are the consequences.

Incotec also contributes to the Plantum seminar Crop Protection 2030: what does it mean for seeds? Incotec Marketing Manager Rob Pronk will discuss the challenges for seed treatment in view of changing legislation and social trends.
