Tesco says it will not join the other supermarket chains phasing out plastic bags for free fruit and veg, stating that in fact, paper bags have a larger carbon footprint.
The grocery store is refusing to go along with Sainsbury’s and Morrisons in phasing out the plastic carrier bags. Customers have repeatedly attacked Tesco for still offering plastic, with some threatening a boycott.
Nonetheless, Tesco representatives have responded to buyer complaints by claiming plastic bags are in fact better for the environment than their paper equivalents.
In a Tweet, a Tesco customer support member mentioned they’d been ‘demonised by plastic critics’ despite emitting much less carbon into the environment throughout their life cycle than paper ones.
